The film follows their journey as the O'Briens donate their beloved insect collection and reflect on their lives spent doing what they love—with the one they love.
The Love Bugs is a film celebrating the love of nature and the nature of love. Retired entomologists Charlie and Lois O’Brien amassed one of the largest private collections of insects in the world. We brought Charlie and Lois’ journal entries and photos to life through playfully animated sequences of the film.

We had the distinct pleasure of working with Allison Otto and Maria Clinton, two directors that left much of the creative for the animationed scenes in our hands. The O'Briens had great stories to tell, and our concept was to animate these scenes as though we were opening up their travel journals, seeing sketches and notes, and experiencing the trip straight from their minds.
Jenny Nichols illustrated the insects in question and various environmental elements and handed them off to our team to layer and bring to life.
